Mia Smith

My name is Mia Smith, and I was recently released from a California State Prison on February 14, 2025, after serving 8 years. During my time incarcerated, I had the incredible opportunity to learn about computer software development through The Last Mile program. I discovered a passion for creating, researching, debugging, and continuously learning new concepts—even though it was often challenging and frustrating, I persevered and kept showing up to class every day. I am deeply grateful to be apart of your community at Columbia University Justice Through Code for this second chance to further develop my skills and pursue a meaningful career in computer coding. In October 2025, I graduated from the Intro to Programming course at Code The Dream, and I am truly excited to be part of this program. I look forward to collaborating with fellow students, learning from everyone, and growing together. Wishing us all great success and happiness in our bright futures!
